Trend Alert: Wallpaper Your Bathroom

Let’s face it. We love wallpaper, and we especially love it in our bathroom! While other rooms may be too large for a bold patterned wallpaper on all of the walls, bathrooms lend themselves to a bit of whimsical fun. Wallpaper can be particularly fun in a powder room or guest bathroom! It shows your guests personality and can be a great conversation starter.

Today, we have gathered up some of our favorite wallpapered bathrooms, and put together some exciting ways to incorporate wallpaper into your home design.

Flower Your Home

Sometimes, designing can be a challenge, especially if it’s an area we have never explored. For me, that would be flowers. Real flowers. Real flowers in vases. My mom can create amazing bouquets and arrangements from the flowers growing in her yard, but I am lacking the green thumb and creative eye that she has. However, I absolutely love having fresh flowers in every room of the house, and what better time for fresh flowers than spring?

So, with mom’s guidance and a lot of Pinterest inspiration, I gathered some delicate arrangements to sprinkle about my house in an effort to bring the spring season into my home. Here are some of my favorite Pinterest arrangements that I drew my inspiration from! (And for more ways to add florals into your home, check out our Trend Alert post from a few weeks ago!)

Trend Alert: Pantone’s Dazzling Blue

A few weeks ago, Pantone came out with their Spring 2014 Fashion Color Report. While these colors are intended to primarily apply to the fashion industry, we decided to steal some of their amazing colors for home decor. Art imitating art, right?

Lately, I’ve been so attracted to all things BLUE. New purse? Blue. New dress? Blue. New throw pillows? Blue. So, of course, when looking at the various choices of spring colors, I was drawn to Dazzling Blue, and Pinterest did not let me down.

Pantone Dazzling Blue Home Decor

This blue pairs well with whites or with other colors. We are loving it with oranges, greens, and yellows! Paint the walls, use it on accessories, or create a focal point in your room by keeping the color isolated for a pop!

As always, check out our Pinterest board to see more inspirations and get information on the pictures we’ve shown here!

How do will you use Dazzling Blue in your home?

How To: Create a Focal Point in Your Room

A focal point is an object in the room that draws a guest’s eyes away from the mess and clutter, and instead starts conversation and adds interest. At least, in my household, there’s mess and clutter. Oops.

Focal points can be a variety of different objects in your home, and today at The Mix, we will outline a few different ways to incorporate a focal point into your already existing design.

Go Bold with Color

bold patterned chairs

Add a bold color is the easiest way to draw attention to an item. For example, if you are looking to add more seating to your living room, consider choosing a chair that has a bright pattern or color, like the one picture above. In an otherwise neutral room, these chairs would stand out and draw guests in.

Pick a Statement Piece

statement piece focal point

This piece doesn’t have to be furniture or even functional (as evidenced by the picture above!). The only purpose of this piece is to make a statement about who you are and what your design aesthetic is.

Use the Walls

Of course, painting an accent wall is old news. Add wallpaper, texture, or amazing artwork to draw the eye and make a statement in any room of the house. We are absolutely loving the look and color scheme of this shutter wall!

Trend Alert: Feathers

Here at The Mix, we love bringing you the latest trends, and the feather trend has been around for a while. However, we have seen a recent upsurge in the way people are using feathers, and we are completely digging the way traditional feathers (instead of peacock feathers) are being used!

We have pulled a few of our favorite ways that people are adopting this trendsetting style for you, and, as always, you can check out our Pinterest board for more inspirations and information on the pictures we’ve featured here!

Tips for Buying Patio Furniture

It’s Friday, the weather is feeling like spring, and we just want to be outside. Today, we have pulled together a list of tips for buying patio furniture that will help kickstart your spring to do list and help you create that backyard escape that you will be craving all summer long!

1. Determine the Function

Uses for Backyard

What you choose to do in your backyard will determine what type of furniture you may want to purchase. When going for a relaxation getaway, you will need more lounging furniture. If you are looking to host nighttime garden parties, chic lanterns and tall furniture that people can use to mingle around will be more important.

2. Make a List

Cute List

Make a shopping list. Think about your main functions of your yard and put together a list of your needs and wants. Will you need lighting? What about bug prevention? Do you want a whole dining table outside, or will a picnic table do? How many chairs should you buy? All of these are considerations you should make when planning your shopping trip.

3. Test It Out

You want to make sure that your furniture is comfortable and inviting. Looks are important, of course, but in the end, you won’t consistently sit on something that isn’t comfortable. Try out the furniture setups in the store, or read recommendations if you are purchasing online.

4. Go For Quality

elegant patio furniture

It’s easy and cheap to buy plastic chairs, and they are pretty comfortable, but you will find yourself with chairs dulled by the sun and brittle from being exposed to the elements. Instead, invest in lasting pieces that will elevate your outdoor patio and keep the luxurious feel for years.

5. Add Some Color

As always, here at The Mix, we love adding color to any and every room. That extends to our patio! You are not limited to wicker, wood, and metal colors when choosing patio furniture. Instead, add colorful pillows, paint the wood (like the picture above!), or use decor to add a splash of color to your outside oasis.

It’s not hard to create an outside space that is personal and functional with a bit of flair! For more outdoor inspirations, check out The Mix’s Outdoor Furniture collection and our Pinterest boards!

How to Make Your Foyer Great

When you walk into someone’s home for the first time the hallway that you see gives an instant impression of what the rest of their home will look like. Entryway, foyer, hallway.. Whatever you call it, it is important. It sets an immediate tone of your home, and it makes a personal statement about your home and your family.

Personalize the Hallway

Personalizing Entryways

The easiest way to make someone feel welcome in your home is to make them feel like part of the family. Add personal pictures to your entryway to show visitors your pride and joy, or include memorabilia and decor that represents your interests and passions.

Add Mirrors

Add Mirrors to Entryway

Adding a mirror opens up an otherwise narrow space. Use multiples to create dimension, or go oversize to make the mirror a statement piece in the hallway. Either way, mirrors can add some serious luxury to a room, and who doesn’t like checking how they look on the way out the door?

Organize Entryways

When walking in the door, the first thing you want to do is drop your keys, drop your purse, and kick off your shoes. Instead of letting all of these things pile up around the door and create clutter, put a coat rack, key hanger, or boxes for shoes and purses. Your guests will enjoy knowing exactly where to place everything when they walk in.

Add Color

Add Color to Entryway

As always, we love to make a statement, especially when that statement is the first thing you see when walking in the home. Use color to amp up your foyer and show your personality by adding great decor. We’ve already talked here, here, and here about how much we are loving on wallpaper lately, and this floral wallpaper makes a HUGE statement!

As always, you can find links to the pictures we used on our Pinterest board. For each picture, I pulled products from The Mix’s website that you can purchase to add serious fun to your entryway (or anywhere else in your home!)

Adding Textures to the Wall

Long gone are the days when off-white walls are the norm. Today, adding rich color and textures can amplify a room and make them seem more rich and luxurious. The best part is that it is so easy to add texture to a wall that is already painted or to incorporate a different design in a room that you are putting a fresh coat of paint on.

Here at The Mix, we have pulled together a few of our favorite tips for you!

Use a Stencil

Stenciled wall paint

Stencils provide a cheap and easy way to add design to your room, and they are so versatile! One option is to use paint on the stencil to create a pattern across the entire room. You can use metallic paints, matte paints, or a complimentary color to make your pattern really pop! Also, we are loving this blog’s idea for using spackle on top of a stencil to create a raised pattern that stands out on your walls.

Create Textured Paint

There are so many ways to add texture to your painted walls. Some techniques involve painting your wall then going over it with a different color to create texture, while other techniques involve adding the texture to paint before it’s dry. These techniques have been around a while, and can be done in a million different ways! The hardest part is choosing which one you like the most.

Use a Textured Wallpaper

Painted Textured Wallpaper

We’ve talked a few times now about how wallpaper is making a big comeback in the home decor world. Instead of using wallpaper for the entire room, however, designers are using wallpaper in certain areas or on one wall to add spice to a room. We are especially loving textured wallpapers and the added dimension it gives a room! Many of them can even be painted over so the texture stays, but the color changes to suit your decor.

Build Up Your Walls

If you are handy, or if you are up for a challenge, adding wood or tiles can really add pizazz to your wall. This article gives a great how-to of how to accomplish the wall pictured above, and makes it seem super easy! If you aren’t up to tackling a project like that, hanging wooden circles, squares, or other shapes that are painted in the same color of the wall can still amp up your wall without it being too complicated.

Trend Alert: Florals!

It’s a beautiful day here in the south, and we are celebrating Easter this Sunday with spring decor all week! Today, we are checking out our favorite ways to add florals to home decor!

Wall Decor

Floral wall decor

When you want to change decor, the easiest way is to switch out your wall decor. It will instantly change the feel of your room and bring it up to day in a noticeable way! Think outside the box for this one. We are loving those antique china plates with floral patterns or the tray with the floral decor on it!

Floral Wallpaper

…Or better yet, turn a whole wall floral! Wallpaper is making a big comeback because it makes such a statement in a room. These floral wallpapers are not the cliched wallpaper in your grandma’s house, but rather adds a focal point to a room! Choose one wall to cover completely, use wainscoting to create an interesting dynamic, or do the whole room! Just make sure that the pattern is not too distracting, and keep the rest of your furniture and decor simple.

Throw Pillows

Floral Throw Pillows

Like wall decor, throw pillows are a great way to add seasonal decor to the room without making long-lasting changes. As the seasons come and go, you can change out the pillows. Plus, they are a great way to add color and pizazz to your room! We love the variety of colors that these pillows provide. (Those blue and white pillows at the top are marvelous!)

Fresh Flowers

Fresh Floral Design

Is there anything better than walking into a room and smelling fresh flowers? Grocery stores and local wholesalers provide cheap ways to pick up fresh flowers to spruce up any room in your home, and rustic vases like the ones above really add character!

Spring is in full bloom, and we are obsessing over everything floral! Check out our Pinterest board for links to all of the pictures below, plus more Spring inspirations!

Trend Alert: Pantone Color Palette – Tinted Medley

It’s our week of all things Spring! A few weeks ago, we showed you Pantone’s Style Setting Palette. Today, I’m bringing to you another one of my favorite color palettes from Pantone. Tinted Medley is full of warm rosy colors that are perfectly feminine without being too girly.

Here’s what Pantone has to say about their color palette:

Tinted Medley is truly a harmonious composition of closely related, deliciously warm tones with peach and pink striking the main chord. Bellini, apricot wash, peach amber and macadamia are compatible blends, while powdered roses and yellows underscore and support the perfect pitch of an ethereal rosy-taupe.

Here at The Mix, we have rounded up a few ideas to help you get inspired by this warm and rosy color palette!

Pantone Tinted Medley

What do you think? These warm pinks with a bit of champagne, yellow, or gray mixed in makes the perfect match for any room in need of a touch of spring! Use pillows or go for a sweeping change and paint the walls. With a great palette like this, you won’t regret it!
