Flower Your Home

Sometimes, designing can be a challenge, especially if it’s an area we have never explored. For me, that would be flowers. Real flowers. Real flowers in vases. My mom can create amazing bouquets and arrangements from the flowers growing in her yard, but I am lacking the green thumb and creative eye that she has. However, I absolutely love having fresh flowers in every room of the house, and what better time for fresh flowers than spring?

So, with mom’s guidance and a lot of Pinterest inspiration, I gathered some delicate arrangements to sprinkle about my house in an effort to bring the spring season into my home. Here are some of my favorite Pinterest arrangements that I drew my inspiration from! (And for more ways to add florals into your home, check out our Trend Alert post from a few weeks ago!)

How To: Create a Focal Point in Your Room

A focal point is an object in the room that draws a guest’s eyes away from the mess and clutter, and instead starts conversation and adds interest. At least, in my household, there’s mess and clutter. Oops.

Focal points can be a variety of different objects in your home, and today at The Mix, we will outline a few different ways to incorporate a focal point into your already existing design.

Go Bold with Color

Add a bold color is the easiest way to draw attention to an item. For example, if you are looking to add more seating to your living room, consider choosing a chair that has a bright pattern or color, like the one picture above. In an otherwise neutral room, these chairs would stand out and draw guests in.

Pick a Statement Piece

This piece doesn’t have to be furniture or even functional (as evidenced by the picture above!). The only purpose of this piece is to make a statement about who you are and what your design aesthetic is.

Use the Walls

Of course, painting an accent wall is old news. Add wallpaper, texture, or amazing artwork to draw the eye and make a statement in any room of the house. We are absolutely loving the look and color scheme of this shutter wall!

Tips for Buying Patio Furniture

It’s Friday, the weather is feeling like spring, and we just want to be outside. Today, we have pulled together a list of tips for buying patio furniture that will help kickstart your spring to do list and help you create that backyard escape that you will be craving all summer long!

1. Determine the Function

Uses for Backyard

What you choose to do in your backyard will determine what type of furniture you may want to purchase. When going for a relaxation getaway, you will need more lounging furniture. If you are looking to host nighttime garden parties, chic lanterns and tall furniture that people can use to mingle around will be more important.

2. Make a List

Cute List

Make a shopping list. Think about your main functions of your yard and put together a list of your needs and wants. Will you need lighting? What about bug prevention? Do you want a whole dining table outside, or will a picnic table do? How many chairs should you buy? All of these are considerations you should make when planning your shopping trip.

3. Test It Out

You want to make sure that your furniture is comfortable and inviting. Looks are important, of course, but in the end, you won’t consistently sit on something that isn’t comfortable. Try out the furniture setups in the store, or read recommendations if you are purchasing online.

4. Go For Quality

elegant patio furniture

It’s easy and cheap to buy plastic chairs, and they are pretty comfortable, but you will find yourself with chairs dulled by the sun and brittle from being exposed to the elements. Instead, invest in lasting pieces that will elevate your outdoor patio and keep the luxurious feel for years.

5. Add Some Color

As always, here at The Mix, we love adding color to any and every room. That extends to our patio! You are not limited to wicker, wood, and metal colors when choosing patio furniture. Instead, add colorful pillows, paint the wood (like the picture above!), or use decor to add a splash of color to your outside oasis.

It’s not hard to create an outside space that is personal and functional with a bit of flair! For more outdoor inspirations, check out The Mix’s Outdoor Furniture collection and our Pinterest boards!

Adding Textures to the Wall

Long gone are the days when off-white walls are the norm. Today, adding rich color and textures can amplify a room and make them seem more rich and luxurious. The best part is that it is so easy to add texture to a wall that is already painted or to incorporate a different design in a room that you are putting a fresh coat of paint on.

Here at The Mix, we have pulled together a few of our favorite tips for you!

Use a Stencil

Stenciled wall paint

Stencils provide a cheap and easy way to add design to your room, and they are so versatile! One option is to use paint on the stencil to create a pattern across the entire room. You can use metallic paints, matte paints, or a complimentary color to make your pattern really pop! Also, we are loving this blog’s idea for using spackle on top of a stencil to create a raised pattern that stands out on your walls.

Create Textured Paint

There are so many ways to add texture to your painted walls. Some techniques involve painting your wall then going over it with a different color to create texture, while other techniques involve adding the texture to paint before it’s dry. These techniques have been around a while, and can be done in a million different ways! The hardest part is choosing which one you like the most.

Use a Textured Wallpaper

Painted Textured Wallpaper

We’ve talked a few times now about how wallpaper is making a big comeback in the home decor world. Instead of using wallpaper for the entire room, however, designers are using wallpaper in certain areas or on one wall to add spice to a room. We are especially loving textured wallpapers and the added dimension it gives a room! Many of them can even be painted over so the texture stays, but the color changes to suit your decor.

Build Up Your Walls

If you are handy, or if you are up for a challenge, adding wood or tiles can really add pizazz to your wall. This article gives a great how-to of how to accomplish the wall pictured above, and makes it seem super easy! If you aren’t up to tackling a project like that, hanging wooden circles, squares, or other shapes that are painted in the same color of the wall can still amp up your wall without it being too complicated.

Small Changes That Make an Impact

Springtime also brings with it a need for renewal or a sprucing up in our homes. It’s no coincidence that it’s called “spring cleaning”, after all. However, you can’t go out and buy new furniture every time you want to breath some new life into your room. Luckily, there a few changes you can make in your home that won’t bust your bank, but will give your room a feeling of newness.

1. Freshen Up the Walls

After a while, looking at the same color walls day in and day out can be tiring. A fresh coat of paint, with texture, design, or print, can help make an old room feel new.

Paint

Nothing changes a room more dramatically than a new paint color. It’s not hard to do this fix yourself, and can be relatively cheap depending on your paint choice. Before you dive head first into this project, however, consider what you would like from your room, and also what colors your furniture incorporates. You wouldn’t want to paint your room a bright color that clashes with your favorite chair!

Wallpaper

If you’re feeling really brave, consider wallpaper! We aren’t talking about your grandmother’s small floral pattern, but something big and bold that can instantly change the feel of the room. We are loving this bold bathroom!

2. Change Your Decor

If you are looking for a quick change to your room, look no further than decor! Rooms can change with the seasons or the holidays, or you can completely change the theme of the room. (I’m love love loving these driftwood wall hangings from The Mix. Click the pictures to purchase!)

Pillows

Sometimes, changing the throw pillows on your bed or sofa can be just what you need to freshen up a room. Pillows bring in a major element of design style, especially if your bed or sofa is a neutral color. In the picture above, changing the room design would be a simple matter of changing the color of the bedding and pillows!

Mirrors

I know that we featured the room above in our Light vs. Dark post, but I just couldn’t get enough of these mirrors! Adding a mirror to your wall will open up the room and make it feel larger. Mirrors also reflect the light in the room, which brightens up the room and makes it feel more warm.

Wall Decor

Whether you choose to Do-It-Yourself, or purchase wall decor from a vendor (like The Mix!), wall decor can have a major impact on your home aesthetics.  Simply change the colors or theme of your decor to add a different twist to your existing home design.

3. Rearrange

Sometimes, all we need to spruce up our homes is to rearrange what we already own into a space that allows for us to be more productive and comfortable.

Flow

room with good flow

Simply rearranging your furniture can bring new life to your room. Think about the flow of traffic in your home and figure out where you may feel disrupted. Rearrange your furniture to create a better flow and walkspace.

Lighting

Lighting is important in living spaces. You don’t want to have a glare on your television when you are laying in bed, and you don’t want to have to squint to read in your favorite chair. Rearrange your furniture so that the lighting is optimal for the activities you do in each room, and add lighting accordingly. (How cute is this bird lamp?? I hope these tips help you with the renewal of your home! Are there in tricks that you swear by in your home?

DIY Hack: Scrapbook Paper Decor

Ok, I’ll be honest. One of my favorite things to shop for in craft stores is scrapbook paper. The selection! The cheap (cheap!) price! The possibilities!

Even though my illustrious career of scrapbooking came to a screeching halt when I left high school, I still find ways to incorporate scrapbook paper into my home decor. Why? Well, it’s cheap. And versatile. There are so many ways to manipulate it and come out with something great.

We are all about innovative home decor here at The Mix, and we wanted to bring you a few of our favorite projects that we found on (of course) Pinterest. Click on each picture to get a detailed description of how to complete each DIY written by bloggers who have actually done these–and succeeded!

These are just a few that Pinterest has to offer! The best part about using scrapbook paper as a decor medium is the easy ability to customize it and make it fit any color scheme you have in your home. Personally, I’ve done a few of these, both for permanent decor in my home, as well as seasonal themes to add a bit of festivity to my home.

Let us know if you attempt any of these projects!
